The noise makers, funny hats and streamers have been put away and the New Year was welcomed in with style. And now a new decade begins with hopes that the great changes promised in ’09 will really materialize. Soon the Obamas will return to the White House and Congress will reconvene for another session filled with new resolves.
The first resolution on their list should be to listen more closely to the people who elected them to office. The campaign rhetoric is the only barometer that the public has to weight one candidate against the other. And the public needs to trust that what is said is what will be done.
Second, the President and Congress should resolve to stand on their own laurels and stop blaming anyone else for governmental deficiencies. They had a whole year to change the policies of the former administration and neglected to do it. So they can blame no one else for whatever evolves in the coming days.
And last, the President should resolve to not be sucked in by the immortalizing platitudes. He is but a man no matter what the press thinks. The “historic moments” of 2009 did not a messiah make. They only emphasized the need that this administration has for constant approval and the lengths it will go to get it. A little humility is very much needed.
As for me, I resolve to tell it like I see it and sing out loud and strong. I will speak well of those who I believe do well and damn those who I feel need to be damned. I will listen to opposing positions, weigh the opinions offered and post all that meet my “no malice or rancor” guidelines. I will strive to keep Quackin Duck fresh and fun, and I sincerely hope you will continue to follow the Ole Quacker in 2010. Happy New Year to all of you and thank you so much for your patronage.
