T'was The Night Of The Big Vote

A Christmas fairytale of bipartisan cooperation in Congress

loosely adapted from the poem by Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston

T'was the night of the big vote and all through the House

Representatives worked with computer and mouse.

The bill on the floor, much too large to be read,

needed to pass and be put to bed.

The House Speaker, of course, with her usual flair

polled everyone hoping the votes would be there.

Miffed that the Senate had quit for the night

Republicans readied for a long and hard fight.

When in the corridor way out in the hall,

a commotion ensued with representatives all.

Democrats left, Republicans right,

determined to end it for good on this night.

The clock ticked away as their voices rang out.

What was the problem? What was this about?

Then into the chamber the Senators came

and Steny Hoyer called them by name.

Boxer and Reid, McCain, Baucus, and Snowe,

Hatch, Graham, and Dodd, all names that we know.”

Many more Senators followed  close behind,

till in the chamber both sides were aligned.

Senators, Congressmen together stood there

with tension so thick, it just hung in the air.

Then from the floor to all their delight

came words that resounded well into the night.

“The time is upon us, a truce we must call,

to our own homes we must go one and all.

So let’s all shake hands and adjourn without fear

Our Country is safe. All will keep till next year.”

Crossing the aisle the greetings began

with holiday wishes down to a man.

And the Speaker exclaimed as she turned out the light,

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

May Congress get its ducks in a row in the New Year.

And may God bless America and grant everyone everywhere

health, happiness, peace and prosperity in 2010.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very Happy New Year.
